Islands, fascinated biologists and ecologists from the days of Darwin and continue to this days.

As islands’ species communities are isolated, life in islands works as real time laboratories for the observer. Andaman and Nicobar Islands is one such archipelago which has lots of potentials to ask many scientific questions – but not much has been done so far.  In most of the cases the basic scientific information is missing. Relatively better documented group are the birds. These Islands are rich in avifauna with nearly 297 taxa of birds with around 40 percent endemism. Of the land mass, disproportional to the size of the Islands  86% of area are unexplored forests and this natural vegetation supports high avifaunal diversity and abundance.
